Wings Over Whales Kaikoura provide whale watching flights, scenic air tours and private aircraft charter. Our professional and experienced team deliver a friendly flying experience, where the comfort and safety of each passenger is paramount.
Passengers are able to enjoy their own window seat and our high-winged aircraft will allow you to have an unobstructed view of Kaikoura’s marine wild life and majestic scenery.
We operate from Kaikoura Airport, an 8km drive south from the town centre. Located in an inviting log cabin terminal, customers can enjoy great facilities with on-site gift shop, café and rest room facilities.
Visitors are encouraged to allow 1 hour to complete either their whale watching or scenic flight experience. An information and safety briefing is conducted prior to travel and all flights are 30 minutes in duration unless an alternative length of trip has been agreed on.
We welcome individuals, groups and also those with children, infants and limited mobility.
Wings Over Whales History
Wings Over Whales have a long and successful history of operation and have been conducting whale watching scenic flights since November 1991. With over 20 years’ in the tourism industry, we have a built a solid reputation and are proud to offer this unique experience to visitors from all around the world.

Wings Over Whales operate two aircraft; a 4-seater Cessna 172 as well as an 8-seater Gippsland Airvan. Both planes are high-winged allowing each passenger their own window seat and unobstructed views of Kaikoura’s marine wild life and majestic scenery.
Gippsland GA8 Airvan
The largest of our fleet offers comfortable seating for 7 passengers and 1 Pilot. This aircraft has large dome windows for excellent viewing opportunities as well as a large rear door for easy access.
Cessna 172 - This is one of the most popular light aircraft in the world with an unbeatable safety record. Offering seating for 3 passengers and 1 Pilot the Cessna 172 offers excellent 360 degree views and comfortable seating.
Meet our team of experienced and highly trained pilots.
Liam has been flying for over 6 years and is one of our most experienced pilots here at Wings Over Whales. He has spent half of his career flying in the Kaikoura area operating whale watching flights and is also a qualified flying instructor. As a member of the Kaikoura Coastguard Civil Air Patrol, Liam has also been involved with Search & Rescue missions as both an observer and pilot.
John is the chief pilot at Wings Over Whales and has been flying commercially for 30 years. John was the previous owner of Wings Over Whales, having initially set up aerial operations in Kaikoura in 1991. He is a Coastguard Rescue vessel skipper and a Search and Rescue Pilot. John has also attended the National Emergency Academy on behalf of Coastguard New Zealand in the USA to advise on fixed wing aircraft search and rescue.
Edward is the part owner of Wings over Whales and is also our newest pilot. With over 6 years of aviation experience across Australia and New Zealand as well as being a qualified flying instructor, Edward is not just passionate about flying, but is also passionate about providing a memorable experience to those that fly with us.
Antony has been flying since 2008 and started his flying career as a full time flying instructor teaching aspiring commercial pilots to fly in Auckland, New Zealand. He then moved to Kaikoura in 2013 to start flying in the whale watching industry. Since then he has gained a wealth of experience in the Kaikoura area conducting hundreds of whale watching, scenic, and charter flights. He is also a pilot for the Kaikoura Coastguard Civil Air Patrol and has taken part in a number of Search & Rescue operations.
